My father passed away Saturday April 26, 2008, we buried him yesterday May 1, 2008.
This has been the hardest week of my life. I am 37yrs old and though I have loved and lost, experienced setbacks and frustration, even times in my life when I thought things were dire during all of those times I had Dad to lean on. He kept me strong, taught me how to persevere and made me who I am today.
As I am known to do, I have found a Dropkick Murphys lyric that applies directly to this sentiment. From Surrender:
I was at my weakest state
And you kept pushing me on
You gave me something to believe in
And it keeps me standing strong
These lessons that I've learned
These things I'll carry on
And when you're gone I'll honor you
Each day, however long
So, now today, as life goes on and we go about our daily business, I can't help but think of my Papa at every turn. It is my job to be the man and the parent that my father was to me, to my son.
As I drive down the road I notice the ridiculously elevated gas prices and think back to a recent conversation with my father, my son is in the car next to me and so the conversation starts...
"These prices are insane, not solely for the price of fuel but how it affects everything else, you know what Grandpa used to say.... "
We carry on.

Hey BGH, so sorry you had to go through this. Your presence here was sorely missed. :)
It's amazing how much strength we find in ourselves during times like these.
I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I lost my father in December, and I miss him every day.
Just remember that every moment you spent together is now a part of you and who you are. He lives on through the influence he had on you and those who loved him.
Thank you both very much!!
"Grief is the purest evidence that we have loved and loved well."
Your father was loved extra-well.
My heart goes out to you and your family.
It's so hard to understand how the rest of the world goes on as if nothing extraordinary has happened, yet you know that something extraordinary has happened and nothing will be the same again.
You have taken your father's lessons in how to be a good father and are passing those lessons along to your son. Your father's legacy is a good one.
